Ordinary Time: Mardi Gras

Our Winter postings are now concluded. We will begin posting again in the Spring for Lent on March 1 through Lent and the Easter Season. Until then....

We live in an area of the world that celebrates Mardi Gras. The season of Mardi Gras has many connections with the Catholic Church. First of all, the season starts on Epiphany, or "King's Day," when the 3 kings brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and mur to the Christ Child. It is a time when the 3 liturgical seasons of Christmas (gold), Ordinary Time (green) and Lent (purple) come together. The "baby" in the king cake represents the Baby Jesus. Also, it is a time of celebration before the season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Please refer to the link for more information about the Christian celebration of Mardi Gras.

Friday of the Second Week of Christmas (Traditional Date of Epiphany)

Today we celebrate the traditional Feast of the Epiphany.
A link has been added about this Feast and the tradition of Blessing the Home. January 6 is its traditional date, but this Feast may be celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8, as it is this year on Sunday.

Today we also celebrate the Memorial of St. Andre Bessette. A link has been added about this saint.

Scripture: "When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled,  and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people,
He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea,  for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel."

Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,  "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them,  until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star,  and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,  they departed for their country by another way.."
Matthew 2:1-12

Readings for the Day:
Isaiah 60:1-6
Psalm 72
Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6

Thursday of the Second Week of the Christmas Season 2017

Today is also the Memorial of St. John Neumann.
A link has been added about this saint.

"On the twelfth day of Christmas...
my true love gave to me....
twelve drummers drumming...."

Symbolism: The twelve drummers drumming symbolize the twelve beliefs stated in the Apostle's Creed.

Scripture: "Now they were persevering in the doctrine of the Apostles, and in the communion of the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers. And fear developed in every soul. Also, many miracles and signs were accomplished by the Apostles in Jerusalem. And there was a great awe in everyone. And then all who believed were together, and they held all things in common."
Acts of the Apostles 2:42-44

Readings of the Day:
1 John 3:11-21
Psalm 100
John 1:43-51
